Toto Interconnected Solar Hybrid Mini-Grid Rehabilitation & Integration
Technical supervision role on an interconnected solar hybrid mini-grid rehabilitation project involving solar PV generation, battery storage integration, transformer installation and restoration of an existing dormant distribution network. The project restored reliable electricity supply to the Toto community after approximately ten years of network inactivity.
Engineering Scope
Technical work and responsibilities
Supervise generation-site construction activities including site marking, fencing layout, PV plinth preparation, civil work monitoring and PV structure installation.
Coordinate installation of 952 PV modules, eight 50 kW PV inverters, PVDB, LVSG and SCADA communication infrastructure.
Support integration of 972 kWh BESS system with associated power conversion, communication and energy management systems.
Supervise installation of 1 MVA step-up transformer for grid interface and 500 kVA step-down transformer for system utilisation.
Coordinate transformer rehabilitation activities across five existing community transformers including inspection, servicing, moisture removal and restoration activities.
Supervise installation of transformer accessories including lightning arresters, gang isolators, earthing systems and associated protection equipment.
Monitor installation of armoured cables, DC cables, cable termination, cable management and industrial earthing systems.
Supervise contractor activities, quality inspections, electrical testing and technical documentation for project handover.
Support integration of solar PV, BESS and existing distribution infrastructure to restore reliable electricity supply to the community.
Delivery Outcomes
Verified project results
Successfully restored electricity supply to a previously dormant community distribution network after approximately ten years of inactivity.
Supported reliable electricity access for over 2,800 households, commercial users, productive users and public facilities.
Integrated solar PV generation, battery storage, transformers and existing distribution assets into an interconnected hybrid system.
Improved network reliability through rehabilitation of existing transformer assets and installation of protection accessories.
